Engineers are responsible for our safe navigation of the Texas waterways and near shore terrestrial navigation. While cruising by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and the Coast Guard Base we will talk about who maintains the navigable waters of the US (without dredging of the channel, we would not have the ability to move goods, products, or people to and from offshore Texas) and who is in charge of certifying individuals operating on the water and vessels to ensure safety and suitability of each. Engineers do more than build bridges, they also design, build, and maintain engines and machines in vessels, railroad locomotives, and airplanes. NASA hires approximately 20 different types of engineers. We will talk about the USACE and their expansive list of career opportunities (not just engineers). We will discuss the myriad applications of an engineering background and/or degree, including Marine Diesel Technicians, Marine Engineers, and Naval Architects.
