Students can participate in real Field Methods Science with a Marine Scientist onboard. We will look for the perfect pod of dolphins to deploy the hydrophone (an underwater microphone) so we can hear how these intelligent animals communicate and navigate. We will collect water samples and test for pH, temperature, salinity, and electric conductivity. These parameters are important indicators of the health of the marine ecosystem. Students will also deploy a plankton tow net. We will collect samples from the net and look at them closer once we get back to shore and talk about the importance of phytoplankton and zooplankton in the marine food chain. We will talk about topics related to Aquatic Sciences, fields of study, and future careers related to Marine Biology.
